Science Around Us, a series consisting of six books – 0 to 5 – has been designed to lead our primary school students to a scientific exploration of their environment and to prepare them for a deeper probe into scientific phenomena around them in their higher classes. The series has been prepared in conformity with the latest NCERT syllabus. The books are equally suitable for the schools following the syllabi of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations and other State Boards. As such, these books can be profitably used in all schools, irrespective of the syllabus being followed.
Children are naturally endowed with curiosity. They are eager to know about their surroundings. They not only observe facts but are keen to discover the ‘why’ and ‘how’ about them. With this important trait of a child’s personality in view, most of the material in the series Science Around Us has been presented through illustrations and the children are encouraged to record their observations. Thus, instead of being superficially loaded with facts, they are gently guided towards the assimilation of facts. The use of language has been easy, concise and lucid with a restricted selection of sentence patterns and vocabulary. Illustrations are vivid, authentic, colourful and eye-catching.
Each lesson in the end has a brief résumé, a set of exercises and a list of activities. The résumé is meant for a quick glance over the contents of the chapter. The exercises, carefully framed and graded, will not only test the child’s knowledge but also sharpen his/her sensibility and ensure a more precise and accurate grasp of the subject. The activities will invite a greater participation of the children in the learning process. Surely these distinguishing features of the series will make it pre-eminently suitable for primary school children.
